New Haven, CT House Fire, Jan 1900

WOMAN TERRIBLY BURNED.

Mrs. Walter S. Mitchell in Critical Condition at Hospital.

Mrs. Walter S. Mitchell of 42 William Street received terrible burns this morning at her home. She is now in the hospital and it is not certain that she will recover. Mrs. Mitchell is 36 years of age, and is the wife of a bartender employed at George H. Belcher's saloon at Grand Avenue and Olive Streets. While she was shaking down a fire in a stove at home her clothing caught fire. Her agonizing shrieks as the flames reached her body attracted the attention of neighbors who ran to her rooms and smothered the fire, although by that time every stitch of the woman's clothing had been burned. Mrs. Mitchell was hurried off to the New Haven Hospital in the ambulance suffering intense agony. At the hospital the physicians found that her body was a mass of burns and it is hardly believed that she can recover.
