Held For Theatre Fire.
Manager of the Rialto in New Haven Accused of Manslaughter.
New Haven, Conn., March 27.-Lawrence W. Carroll, who was manager of the Rialto Theatre here when it was burned last November, bringing death to nine persons, was held for the Superior Court today by Judge Hoyt on a charge of manslaughter, based upon the finding of Coroner Mix.
The Court held that while Carroll was not responsible for changes which converted the Rialto to an illegal legitimate theatre from a legal moving picture one, he was responsible for conditions which made a serious fire possible. It was gross neglect on Carroll’s part, the Court found, for him to have allowed incense to be burned on the stage, and to have permitted additions to inflammable scenery and draperies. Carroll’s bond was placed at $1,000.
A. S. Black of Boston, the third man charged by Coroner Mix as responsible for the disaster, has not appeared in court. A building inspector recently was held not liable and discharged.
