Dotsero, Co Train Wreck - 18 Killed

AWFUL WRECK ON D. & R. G.

Eighteen Killed and Many Injured Amid Scenes of Sickening Horror

Eighteen were killed and scores suffered more or less injury in a wreck near Glenwood Springs, Colo, Friday night, when westbound D. & R. G. passenger train train No. 5 crashed headon into an east bound special freight.

At the time of the accident both trains were under fullsteam, the passenger tearing along at a 50-mile an hour clip and the freight making better, than ordinary time to reach a siding a few miles ahead. Thus, the impact was fearful, the forward portions of both trains being instantly reduced to splinters and scrap iron and the passengers of No. 5 being hurled headlong into the tangled wreckage.

In an instant all was chaos and confusion, the cries of the maimed and dying mingling with the hiss and roar of escaping steam, while over all hovered the blackness of midnight, broken only by a tongue of flame here and there as the fire fiend took possession of the wreck.

Owing to the senseless secretiveness of the railroad officials, but meagre details of the catastrophe are obtainable. However, it is know that it is one of the worst railroad wrecks in D. & R. G. history, and that, when the full facts are brought to light, they will show to the traveling public what awful results may follow the misunderstanding of orders – which is given as the reason for the horror of Friday night.
