CLOVERDALE SITE IS BURNED AS FIRES SWEEP NORTH AREAS.

A spectacular early morning fire today which destroyed the U.S. Hotel, historic landmark at Cloverdale in Northern Sonoma county, was added to widely scattered fire in Northern California believed to have killed two persons.
The blaze starting in the rear of the two-story brick hotel was discovered at 1 a.m. and the 25 guests aroused in time to reach safety before flames engulfed the building.

$80,000 Damage.
The Cloverdale fire department, aided by four state division of forestry crews, fought the fire two hours before bringing it under control. The hotel, including a men's clothing store, a barber shop, a plumbing shop and a newstand on the ground floor, were destroyed. The flames spread to an adjoining food locker establishment, damaging half of the building and spoiling much of and stored food.
Early estimates placed damage at $80,000.
Hotel guests, some reaching safety by climbing through second story windows, lost much of their luggage and clothing.
In other sections of Northern California, another hotel was destroyed and hundreds of acres of brush burned over as tinder dry conditions prevailed.
Night Clerk JAMES DAUGHERTY and Bootblack JOE MUNKITTRICK were believed to have perished when fire destroyed the three-story Mr. Lassen hotel in Susanville. Both had basement rooms and may have been trapped, firemen said. Damage was estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In San Francisco six firemen were hurt, one seriously, in fighting a three-alarm blaze at the Palomar ballroom on downtown Market street. Battalion Chief JOHN WEBB suffered a possible broken back when part of the ballroom's roof collapsed shortly after the blaze was brought under control.
