MASKED MEN SET FIRE TO DURST BROS.' BARN

Wheatland, Cal., June 14. - Masked men fired a large hay barn on the hop ranch of Durst brothers near here shortly after midnight today. They beat up a detective who found them endeavoring to fire several hop kilns and fled, escaping a fusilade fired by other watchmen. Late today J. A. Ryan, the detective, who was assaulted still was unconscious.

Durst brothers' ranch was the scene of rioting last August in which four men were killed. The riot was started as the result of dissatisfaction with provisions for the hop pickers' comfort and much bitterness resulted.

Agents of the Industrial Workers of the World were active in the situation.

Since then many threats have been made that this year's hop crop on the Durst ranch would not be harvested, although the ranch has been put in order under the supervision of the state industrial commission.
