NORTH-BOUND PORTLAND TRAIN WRECKED IN NORTH
Brakeman From Sacramento Killed and Passengers Are Hurt in Panic.

REDDING, May 14. - Northbound Portland passenger train No. 12 was run into by two light engines at Copley tonight shortly before 9 o'clock. Brakeman William Jones, of Sacramento, was instantly killed, and several others are reported injured. The Deputy Coroner and a section crew left this city in a special train at 9 o'clock for the scene. The passenger train had stopped for water, and the engines, the engineers apparently unaware of the train ahead, shot around the curve, colliding with the standing train. Passengers were thrown from their seats and a panic ensued, but no passenger was injured.
Both engines are wrecked, and the mail and baggage cars were badly damaged.
