Sea So Heavy People Think It Is an Earthquake.

HEAVY DAMAGE IS DONE TO PROPERTY

Houses Moved from Beach to Places of Safety.

Donkey Engines Are Use To Move Them---Standard Oil Company Loses $400,000 Concrete Pier at El Segundo---Water Higher Than High Tide at Time for Low Tide. Flood Warnings Sent Inland.

Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 3.---The Pacific ocean is today battering the beaches for 100 miles along the coast of southern California, doing much damage. Although last night's terrific gale has died down, so heavy was the sea at Long Beach that residents of nearby towns thought it was an earthquake.

The Standard OIL company's $400,000 concrete pier at El Segundo was washed completely away.

At the hour for low tide this morning the water was higher that any higher tide of recent years and much country never before invaded was flooded.

Donkey engines were employed in many places to move houses away from the beach.

A Japanese fishing village above Santa Monica is inundated.

Wire communication to the north is greatly hampered.
