Fire in Chinatown.

At ten minutes of 8 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in the large three-story brick building, corner of two alleys in the block bounded by Dupont, Stockton, Jackson and Pacific streets, and an alarm was turned in from box 25. When the alarm was sounded volumes of smoke were pouring out of the upper windows. The Department responded with its usual alacrity, but it was a full hour before the flames were under control. The building was about 40 by 60 feet in size, and was full of Chinese women. It was completely gutted, with the exception of a few small front rooms on the ground floor, but the walls do not appear to be much injured. The loss of contents will amount to several thousand dollars, which is covered by insurance. The building was owned by four Chinamen, and stood on ground leased of John Sullivan. The damage to the building will probably amount to from $8,000 to $10,000, and is reported to be well insured.
