Burbank, CA Twin-Engine Transport Crashes Sep 1955

AIRLINER CRASHES AT BURBANK, 3 DIE

3 KILLED IN BURBANK CRASH.

Burbank (UP) -- A twin-engine transport, in trouble after takeoff, tried to limp back to Lockheed air terminal today but crashed short of the runway, killing at least three persons and injuring about 25.
The big DC3 cut a power line, mangled a fence, struck a parked air force C54 -- killing a civilian who was working on a wing -- and smashed into a hangar.
The starboard engine exploded and burned but luckily the flames were quickly quelled. Passengers scrambled out and fled, fearing a fire. The nose of the DC3 was broken off.
The nonscheduled airliner, operated by Skycoach, was bound for Oakland.
Listed as dead in the crash were the pilot and copilot, JOSEPH A. BRADSHER, 1027 Guapay ave., Chula Vista, and KEITH DUTSON, 35, Santa Monica. The workman who was killed was WILLIE MALONE, Lockheed air services employe.
The crippled DC3 missed by only a few yards hitting President EISENHOWER'S Super Constellation, "Columbine," here for service. Lockheed built the plane for the president.
