Santa Ana, CA Chartered Jet Crash, Dec 1993

Santa Ana, Calif. (AP) -- A chartered jet traveling between two Los Angeles suburbs crashed nose-first and burned in a field in a congested industrial area, killing all five people aboard but injuring no one on the ground.
The twin-engine plane went down 2 1/2 miles from John Wayne Airport on Wednesday, scattering burning debris over a wide area.
"It was a sea of flames. The trees were on fire," said a witness, Steve Guilford.
"Pieces of the plane were in a path hundreds of yards long. There were several bodies and parts of bodies just lying in the street."
Two crew members and three passengers, all adults, were killed. Their identities were not immediately released.
National Transportation Safety Board official Don Lorente said the cause of the crash was not immediately known. Investigators searched the area today.
No one on the ground was hurt, even though the plane came down during rush hour near a cluster of auto dealerships about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Some automobiles in the adjacent parking lot were damaged.
Dan Mole, who witnessed the crash, said the pilot "could have taken out hundreds of people. He put it down in an empty field."
The plane was flying from LaVerne to the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, 30 miles away. It went into a roll and crashed at a 45-degree angle, Lorente said.
Guilford reported that the plane was on fire before it hit the ground.
