MINERS BLOWN TO ATOMS.

A frightful accident occurred at the Argonaut mine at Jackson, Cal. Four men, WILLIAM J. CURNOW, AMERIGO SCATENA, MICHAEL QUINN and WILLIAM JEWELL, employed in sinking a shaft prepared eighteen or twenty holes and while lighting the fuses, one blast exploded prematurely. CURNOW, SCATENA and QUINN were so badly injured by the explosion that they were unable to do anything to save themselves. They were therefore, exposed to the debris of the other blasts, nine or ten in number. The three men were literally blown to pieces. JEWELL was struck in the back by the first blast but managed to get out of danger before the other explosions occurred. He is severely injured, but will recover.
