Sunset Express is Derailed in the Night

Engineer JAMES BYBEE Instantly Killed

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 29.-THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC OFFICES RECEIVED WORD HERE THIS MORNING THAT THE SUNSET EXPRESS WHICH LEFT HERE AT EIGHT O'CLOCK LAST NIGHT WAS DITCHED AT 2:15 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING THREE MILES EAST OF BRADLY [sic]. ENGINEER BYBEE OF SAN FRANCISCO WAS INSTANTLY KILLED. AN UKNOWN (SIC) MAN WHO WAS STEALING A RIDE WAS ALSO KILLED.

Fireman RICHARDS was badly hurt. The train was made up of seven Pullman coaches and a baggage car.

None of the Pullmans were turned over but five left the track.

Twelve rails were torn up.

An investigation is being made as to the cause of the wreck, but no word has been received as to whether or not the accident was caused by train-wreckers.

It is expected that the track will be cleared so that traffic can be resumed by tonight.
