Pilot Loses Life When Machine Plunges from Great Height Into California Canyon

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Dec. 4. – (AP)- Plunging to earth with terrific speed, a navy plane crashed in flames in Flint canyon, 23 miles northeast of here, today, killing the pilot.
The Navy indicated the craft was a single-seater fighter. The pilot’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
Reports from Poway, a village near the crash scene, said the body was found approximately 20 yards from the plane, which was scattered over a wide area.

Plows Long Furow (sic)
A furrow 20 feet long was plowed “as though by a bulldozer.” Poway residents who had come back from the wreckage reported.
The Poway telephone operator said the craft “in what sounded like a power dive” came down from a great height into Flint canyon.
“There was a terrific explosion and I could see flames.” she said.
Flint canyon is steep and rugged, with the nearest road about a mile distant.
