Oakland, CA Bus And Auto Collision, Aug 1946

BUS - AUTO COLLISION EXACT HEAVY CASUALTIES AND INJURIES.

Three persons were killed early today and 14 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and an automobile on Selby Hill, three-quarters of a mile south of the Carquinez Bridge.
The car was demolished by the crash and the bus narrowly missed toppling over a 500-foot embankment beside the road.
Dead were DR. LEONARD R. HINES, 39, of 4032 Midvale Avenue, a chiropractor; OLIN LEWIS, 40, of 3463 35th Avenue, and Pvt. WARREN W. BEROFFEN, 24, who was stationed at the Fairfield Army Air Base.
Pvt. GEORGE WEISS, 20, also stationed at the Fairfield base suffered a possible skull fracture and was moved today to Letterman General Hospital, where he was reported in a criticil condition.
Highway Patrolmen Herb Lessley and Gordon Campbell, who investigated the accident, said it appeared that the car driven by Dr. Hines was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went out of control on the hill. It sideswiped a car driven by EUGENE HOUSER, 24, of 1107 Curtis Street, Albany, and plunged headlong into the bus.
RUDOLPH BEAVER, 29, of 696 28th Street, driver of the bus, managed to hold his vehicle on the road and prevented it from breaking through the guardrail and plunging into the canyon. He suffered a fractured left ankle.
The bus Oakland-bound was carrying 35 passengers, all of whom were shaken up and bruised in the crash.
Eleven passengers were hospitalized. They included:
CARL MORPHY, 31, of 424 Richmond Street, El Cerrito.
AL MORPHY, 30, same address.
CHARLES WARDEN, 38, 285 Guerrero Street, San Francisco.
JOHN. J. ANDERSON, 45, 369 Mason Street, San Francisco.
WILLIAM TANGODGE, 28, 1342 Greenwich Street, San Francisco.
EUGENE H. STEINMAN, 26, 1925 Tenth Street, Berkeley.
STANLEY PORTER, 33, 1565 Madison Street, Oakland.
MRS. KATHLEEN STEINMAN, 22, Berkeley.
FRANK NORRIS, 34, 17-A Tangier Street, Oakland.
BILLY MIDDLETON, 25, of 733 School Street, Pittsburg.
All of the injured were taken to the Permanente Field Hospital in Richmond and the two soldiers later were transferred to the Army hospital.
Patrolmen Lessley and Campbell said the car hit the bus with such force it drove the heavier vehicle back up the hill for a distance of 28 feet.
