Ontario, CA Plane Hits Car On Freeway, Nov 1960

Ontario, Calif. (UPI) -- BOB YEAKEL, prominent Southern California businessman, and four other persons including two of YEAKELS' sons, were killed Thursday night when his small plane crashed on the crowded San Bernardino Freeway.
All four persons in the plane piloted by YEAKEL, who called himself the "Lucky Dutchman," were killed as well as a fifth person who was in an auto which crashed into the flaming wreckage.
YEAKEL along with his brothers was one of the area's biggest auto dealers. He unsuccessfully ran for Los Angeles mayor in 1957.
San Bernardino County Deputy Coroner W. H. Georgenton said the families of the victims made positive identification.
They were identified as YEAKEL, 41; his sons, KENNETH, 22, and ROBERT, 13, both adopted, and businessman JOSEPH D. TAYLOR of Newport Beach. The auto passenger killed was JOSE CASTAMADA, 48, a Mexican national who was an itinerant farm worker.
Georgenton said YEAKEL was flying from Orange County Airport near Newport Beach to Palm Springs, where he holds extensive real estate, when the crash occurred.
YEAKEL made regular flights from Los Angeles to Palm Springs and back. A member of his firm said he often followed the freeway.
The accident occurred east of here, about 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
The wrecked plane was a Comanche.
A photo of a yacht, "The Lucky Dutchman," also was discovered in the wreckage.
YEAKEL was a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles two years ago. He and five other brothers operated successful automobile and other business in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. BOB YEAKEL was president of YEAKEL Plymouth in Downey and Compton, and headed real-estate enterprises in Los Angeles and Palm Springs.
