Argenta, AR Union Compress Co. fire, Jan 1891

COMPRESS.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Jan. 31. - At 8 o'clock p. m., to-night the Union compress company's building in Argenta, opposite Little Rock, from the Little Rock oil and compress company caught fire in the machinery room and was partially destroyed, causing a loss on machinery, building and cotton aggregating $185,000. There were 1650 bales of cotton in the building, of which, 200 bales were saved. Most of this was cotton shipped from other points to be compressed. Several hundred bales belonged to local dealers. The building and machinery valued at $100,000 was insured for $85,000 in eastern agencies. The cotton was covered by insurance. The Missouri Pacific had the cotton in transit.
