Newport, AR Flood, Aug 1915

4,000 Refugees From that Place are Crowded into Hotels at Little Rock

by Associated Press
Little Rock, Ark., Aug. 24 - Little Rock faces it's fourth gas faminine (sic) this year as a result of the break in the main near Red River near Lewisville caused by the high water. Local officials announced today that the supply of gas would be exhausted by noon tomorrow. This also agects (sic) Hot Springs, Pine Bluff and a number of other Arkansas towns.

Newport is completely cut off from the outside world by the flood waters of White river except for long distance telephone communication and direct connection was resumed this morning after several hours of uncertain service by an indirect route. Train service in and out of Newport is entirely demoralized, the Iron Mountain main line and the White River line track being covered with water from a depth of three to twelve feet. General Superintendent J. W. Dean of the Iron Mountain line is in personal charge of the work of the railroad track and in aiding rescue work. About 400 residents of Newport and vicinity are crowded into two local hotels.
