Harrison, AR Flood, May 1961

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 7, 1961, Harrison, Arkansas suffered what J.E. Dunlap would later describe as "its worst catastrophe since the birth of the city 85 years earlier on March 1, 1876."
According to the American Red Cross, four lives were lost, 80 percent of the town's business district was destroyed, and over 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed in losses exceeding $5.4 million when waters from Crooked Creek raged through the town in what the Army Corps of Engineers labeled a "100-Year-Flood."
