Salem, AR Tornado, Jan 1947

Mammoth Springs, Ark., Jan. 29. (AP)--At least one person was killed, many were injured and scores of homes were destroyed tonight as a tornado ripped through this North Central Arkansas-Southern Missouri region.

First reports coming from Salem, Ark., a small Fulton County town over crippled communication lines, were that the town was in flames.

Paul Morton, Salem newspaper editor, said no one was believed killed there, but that many of the homes smashed by the twister caught fire.

The tornado moved northeastward after striking Salem about 6 p. m. wrecking farm homes in the vicinity of Thayer, Mo., and hitting Couch, Mo.

Doctors and ambulances from a wide area were rushed to Salem, coming from as far as Batesville, 50 miles to the south, to help the injured Ambulances also were sent from Thayer and Hardy.
