Grand Canyon, AZ Helicopter Crashes In Canyon, July 1969
HELICOPTER CRASHES IN CANYON.
Phoenix (AP) -- JAMES SAVAGE, 18, was in critical condition today with injuries suffered when a helicopter crashed yesterday in Grand Canyon, killing his brother.
The dead pilot was JOE SAVAGE, JR., 31, of Grand Canyon.
The younger SAVAGE, of Lake Whitney, Tex., suffered burns over 70 to 90 per cent of his body and was flown to the Maricopa County Hospital.
Park rangers said the helicopter was carrying a load of fuel suspended to a cable from the bottom of the craft.
While carrying the fuel to a spot near Bright Angel Creek in the canyon bottom, the load caught on curbing at Yaqui Point and the pilot was unable to release the cable in time to avoid hitting the canyon wall.
The fuel was to have been used for equipment canyon water pipeline project.
