Wellton, AZ Auto Collision, June 1966
FIERY COLLISION KILLS 6 PERSONS ON ARIZONA ROAD.
Yuma, Ariz. (AP) -- Six persons died and another was critically injured early Sunday in a fiery, head-on collision of two cars about 34 miles east of Yuma.
The highway patrol said five of the dead and the injured person were in one car. The driver was the only occupant of the second vehicle.
The dead were CHARLES WOOD of nearby Wellton, driver of one of the cars. Killed in the other auto were BEN McCOY, RAYMOND SMITH, ADELL FAIR and another unidentified woman and FRANK FAIR, JR. Listed in critical condition at Yuma Parkview Baptist Hospital was JANE MAE SMITH.
All occupants of the second car were from Roll, a farming community near Wellton.
The patrol said WOOD'S car crossed the center line and struck the car driven by McCOY. The impact ruptured a fuel line on WOOD'S car and both vehicles burst into flames.
