Many Bridges Burned on Government Road

Government Doing All it Can to Protect Remaining Property on the Trail.

Valdez, July 24.-Forest fires are raging from the coast to the Tanana River along the government trail and now reach a wider section than ever known since white occupation.

Many of the bridges and culverts have already been destroyed. Colonel RICHARDSON is doing all possible to save remaining sections of the road and bridges and to protect government property assembled at some of the interior stations.

The long dry spell in the Coast Mountains has given the fire plenty of fuel upon which to feed. Those returning from the interior over the trail state that the smoke hangs like a pall over a good part of Alaska. They believe that the fire will travel farther in the timber that ever before, although there are indications that practically the whole of the interior country was burned over at some previous date, long before white people came to Alaska.
