Douglas Island, AK Train Accident Mar 1896
ALASKA TRAIN WRECK.
Engine Ran Onto Dynamite--Indian Woman and Child Killed.
Seattle, March 31.--The steamer Mexico, which came down yesterday brought news of an explosion on Douglas island, Alaska, which killed an Indian woman and her child and threw the engineer of a train to a height variously estimated at from thirty to sixty feet. An engine carrying powder to one of the mines on the island, dropped a can of dynamite on the track. Another train coming along later struck the innocent looking box and an instantaneous scattering of engine, cars and engineer was the result. An Indian woman carrying her child was thrown some distance from the track and both she and the infant were struck by the fragments and crushed.
The engineer was unhurt.
