Elba, AL Flood, Mar 1929 - Mayor & Police Chief Missing
Among the missing were Mayor R. L. Cooper, Elba, and Chief of Police Russ Poll, Elba.
The rescue work in Elba at 2 p.m. was proceedingly [sic] rapidly with approximaely thirty boats plying the flood waters. The rescuers hope to get the remaining 1,000 refugees clear before nigh t [sic] as grave fears have been expressed that the buildings might collapse.
Most of the refugees at 1 p. m. were on top of the May building, located on top of Bullard Hill, and in the second floor of the court house. Boats reported the rescue of Col. V. M. Jones of the national guard Saturday morning, who had been marooned in a tree since 3 p.m. Friday.
