GADSDEN, Ala., June 17. -- Sixteen business houses burned this morning. Loss, $50,000; insurance, $10,000.

FIRE AT GADSDEN, ALA.
GADSDEN, ALA., June 17. -- Sixteen business houses were burned this morning, inflicting a loss of $50,000; insurance $10,000. R. B. Kyle lost six store-houses, worth $5,000, on which there is no insurance. M. McCartney, J. H. Kinnebrew, A. J. Douthit, W. W. Stevenson, N. W. Whisenot, W. P. Powers and K. W. Fulghum are the other principal losers. Great exertions were required to prevent the spread of the flames to the Baptist and Methodist churches.

On June 19, 1882, two days after the most disastrous fire in the City's history to that date, the City Council met to set fire limits and encourage the organization of a fire company. Before the month was out Gadsden had its first organized fire department, Etowah Fire Company No. 1.
