Frightful Wreck Occurs on the Southern Railway Near Berry, Alabama.

THIRTY ARE KILLED; EIGHTY-ONE INJURED

Excursion Train Left Track on Steep Embankment and the Coaches Rolled Over and Over, Being Crushed Like Egg Shells.

Birmingham, Ala., September 1 – While rounding a curve on a high embankment near Berry, Ala., at 9:30 o'clock this morning the engine and four cars of an excursion train on the Southern railway leaped from the track and rolled over and over, smashing the coaches into kindling wood and causing the instant death of thirty persons and the injury of eighty-one others. Physicians say, at least, twenty-nine of the injured cannot live.

With the exception of H. M. DUDLEY, trainmaster of the Southern railway, living at Birmingham: J. W. CROOK, engineer, and ROSCOE SHELBY, of Columbus, Miss., and MRS. MARIE COX, all the dead and injured are negroes who had taken advantage of excursion rates from points in Mississippi to Birmingham.
