Brownwood Flier Dies in Crash of New PT-19 Plane.
BROWNWOOD, Texas, March 21.---E. J. Fowlkes, 39, of Brownwood, veteran private pilot, was killed Friday afternoon in the crash of a newly purchased PT-19 plane which he was flying from Dothan, Ala., to Pecos to be converted into a crop duster.
Fowkles served as a civilian instructor at the Corsicana Army Air War II. He left Brownwood Monday for Dothan to fly back to Pecos the plane which had been purchased by the crop dusting compny for which Fowlkes worked. The plane crashed near Monroeville, Ala. The body will be returned to Brownwood.
Born in Lampasas County, Fowlkes had lived in Brownwood since 1918. Survivors include his wife and two children; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Fowlkes, and brother, Marvin Fowlkes, all of Brownwood.
