Grudup, AL Train Hits Auto At Crossing, Aug 1943
ENTIRE FAMILY KILLED.
FOUR PERSONS DIE AS TRAIN HITS AUTO AT CROSSING.
Gadsden, Ala., Aug. 30. (AP) -- The lives of an entire family of four members were snuffed out yesterday in a grade crossing collision between the auto in which they were riding and a freight train near Grudup, Ala., 12 miles north of here.
State Highway Patrolman W. J. HICKMAN said the auto in which the family and four other persons were returning from a swimming party, stalled on the tracks. The other four were injured, one critically.
The officers listed the dead as P. W. McCOY, 31, a rubber plant worked, of Grudup; LUREAN McCOY, 22, his wife, and their two children, MARY NELL, three, and KATHLEEN McCOY, 11 months.
HICKMAN said the car was dragged 250 feet down the tracks. He identified the injured as JOHN L. McCOY, 16, brother of the dead man; DAVID HIGDON, 12; CHARLIE McDANIEL, 12 and BILLY McDANIEL 10.
