Vinegar Bend, AL Plane Crashed, May 1943

LT. COL. ADAM HEINTZ IS SOLE SURVIVOR OF AIRPLANE CRASH IN WHICH 5 DIE NEAR MOBILE.

GREELEY PILOT PARACHUTES TO SAFETY AS CRAFT BREAKS UP.

Shreveport, La., May 13. -- (AP) -- Five members of the Second Air Support command were killed in an airplane crash near Vinegar Bend, 50 miles north of Mobile, Ala., Wednesday afternoon, the public relations office at Barksdale Field, the command base, announced today.
The pilot of the plane, Lieut. Col. ADAM J. HEINTZ, Greeley, Colo., parachuted to safety but was reported to have suffered minor injuries.
He was able to communicate with the air base here by telephone.
Included among the victims was Major CHENEY COWLES, former managing editor of the Chronicle, Spokane, Wash., intelligence officer of the second air support command.
Major COWLES was the son of W. H. Cowles, Sr., pioneer publisher of the Spokesman-Review and a director of The Associated Press.
Other victims were:
Major SETH W. DODSON, signal officer, Durant, Okla.
Second Lieut. HAWLEY A. THOMAS, co-pilot, Amherst, Ohio.
Staff Sgt. HERBERT E. BRACKEN, Dalthen, Ala.
Staff Sgt. MILFORD HERSHKOWITZ, Kingston, Pa.
The bodies of the victims are at the Martin Touart Funeral Home at Mobile, Ala.
Details of the accident were not learned here. A report was that the plane "broke up in the air."
