B-25 CRASH KILLS PILOTS; CREW CHIEF LEAPS SAFELY.
Dixiana, Ala., Nov. 27. (AP) -- An Air Force B-25 bomber crashed into a hilly field near here Sunday, killing two airmen including the pilot who a former football quarterback. A third man bailed out safely.
Witnesses said one of those killed also bailed out but his parachute failed to open. The plane crashed after engine failure.
COL. ORVILLE E. MOHLER, of Glendale, Calif., the dead pilot, once led the University of Southern California through two of its greatest seasons and established a one-season scoring record which still stands.
MOHLER apparently stuck with the plane and tried to land it on the power of its remaining, sputtering engine. The other victim was identified as COL. ROBERT B. RICHARDS, a member of the Air War College at Maxwell Field, Ala. M/Sgt. R. C. McKEY, crew chief, bailed out and landed unhurt in a nearby creek.
