Loss From Fayette Fire About $359,400

Many of the Burned Structures Will Be Replaced.

Robertson and Dodd, Merchandise and Cotton Dealers, Heaviest Losers.-Propst Brothers’ Loss Estimated at $75,000-People Have Not Lost Heart.

Birmingham, Ala., March 25.-There is a sufficient amount of food stuffs and other necessaries of life at Fayette, the town which was visited by fire yesterday morning, and announcement comes from there today that a handsomer and more enduring town will arise from the fire-swept place.

The latest estimate on the losses is placed at $359,400 and the insurance carried will hardly go above $51,353.

Robertson and Dodd, who conducted a general merchandise business as well as handled cotton, losing several hundred bales, are the heaviest losers, the amount placed at $100,000.

Propst Bothers Lose Heavily.

The next heaviest losers are Propst Bros., who lost two stores and buildings, their loss being placed at $75,000 with $15,000 insurance carried. The fact that there was no fire fighting apparatus in the town has been a lesson and when the new town arises from the ashes every care will be taken to provide protection the next time.

In order to replace many of the legal papers which were destroyed when the court house went up in smoke, the Legislature will be called upon to adopt some laws.

The reports from Fayette are to the effect that though serious the blow to the town the people are brave and intend rebuilding the place immediately, plans already for several houses being under consideration while the smoke is still going up.
